Strong flows observed by Cluster

Strong flows observed by Cluster

Date: 20 November 2007
Satellite: Cluster
Depicts: CIS/HIA observations of plasma flows and ACE measurements of solar wind speed

Observations by the CIS/HIA instrument (black line) onboard the ESA Cluster spacecraft 1 on 25 November 2001 near the Earth's magnetospheric boundary: the magnetopause. Just outside of this boundary, in the region called the magnetosheath, very large flows are observed up to speeds of 1040 kms-1, 60% higher than the solar wind itself as recorded by the ACE spacecraft (blue line).
