ESA Initiatives

SpaceGRID
Funded by ESA General Studies, this project aims to assess the requirements in 4 different ESA technical areas (Space Science, Earth Observation, system engineering), the identification of the initial ESA-wide infrastructure and the prototyping of specific components in the different technical areas. In SpaceGRID, an dedicated steering group will coordinate and manage the 4 different tasks defined in the respective different application areas.

CDF - Concurrent Design Facility
Funded by ESA General Studies, this ESTEC facility has shown the practical utilisation of advanced IT for supporting daily work in space activities. It is a good starting point to develop e-collaboration in space technology. A number of additional proposals, actions and ideas are discussed in Annex 1. For reference, that list should be completed with all known information.

ASTROVIRTEL
The ASTROVIRTEL Project, supported by the European Commission and managed by the ST-ECF on behalf of ESA and ESO, is aimed at enhancing the scientific return of the ST-ECF/ESO Archive. It offers the possibility to European Users to exploit it as a virtual telescope, retrieving and analyzing large quantities of data with the assistance of the Archive operators and personnel. The first call for proposals was issued in April 2000 and the second in April 2001 with a deadline for submission of June 15, 2001.

GREASE
The Grid-aware End-to-end system Analysis and Service Environment (GREASE) is a software framework that will provide benefits of computing in a Computational Grid environment to applications that themselves are not Grid-aware. It provides a portal for access to applications, resources and data using the Internet, a scenario builder that can be used to construct scenarios consisting of chains of applications, and a controller that schedules the jobs on a Computational Grid. To demonstrate the feasibility of the GREASE architecture, a demonstrator will be developed. For this purpose, a Computational Grid will be setup, the required software will be built and a number of applications will be included in the GREASE environment. The applications selected for test in the GREASE environment is the instrument response simulator, developed by Dutch Space for the OMI data processing chain. OMI (Ozone Monitoring Instrument) is an instrument build by Dutch Space and TNO for NIVR (Netherlands Agency for Aerospace Programmes).

The instrument will be mounted on NASA's EOS Aura satellite, which will be launched in 2003. The ESA SME Initiative finances the GREASE project, which is run by Dutch Space.
