    Mission Status

EXOSAT ceased operations on 9 April 1986, at the end of its design lifespan. Natural decay of the orbit caused the satellite to enter the atmosphere on 6 May 1986.

    Post-operational Activities:

    • Creation of EXOSAT database system, incorporating data from all the instruments, plus quick-look analysis results from spectral fitting. Associated software (such as BROWSE, XSPEC) now running on many sites worldwide
    • Creation of Interactive Analysis software suite, for creating FITS data format from FOT data versions of, for example, spectra and lightcurves
    • Establishment of EXOSAT archive containing final-observation tapes (FOTS) of most observations. FOTS now stored online at ESTEC
