    Annual Report 2004

Extract from annual report to the council for PRODEX / PECS activities 2004.

The major event of the year under review was undoubtedly the launch of Rosetta for which PRODEX has substantially contributed by supporting the instrument ROSINA (DFMS and RTOF). Another major undertaking was the Chinese launch of Double Star whose NUADU instrument has been greatly supported by PRODEX.

At the 12th PRODEX Programme Participants meeting, held in Paris on 9 November 2004, the renewal of the PRODEX Declaration for the period 2006 – 2010 has been addressed, as prescribed by the PRODEX terms of reference, and the funding of the programme could once again be secured for the next five-year period.

The PRODEX Office has been entrusted with the setting up and implementation of the arrangements and management structure for the Plan for European Cooperating States (PECS). Hungary was the first participating State to this programme. In November 2004, the Czech Republic intends to sign the PECS Charter, hence becoming the second PECS participating State. Poland and Romania, both declared admissible to PECS by ESA, have not yet formally stated their intention to negotiate their participation to the programme.

In 2004, the following experiments or experiment subsystems were finalised and/or launched:

    Support to Scientists:

In addition, 168 scientists in the PRODEX participating States received support in the framework of European (mostly ESA) missions.

The number of all scientists supported from the PRODEX Programme during 2004 in the various countries involved in PRODEX is given in the table below:

Country Number of Scientists Number of Missions
    Austria 2 2
    Belgium 136 89
    Denmark 4 4
    Ireland 4 4
    Norway 5 2
    Switzerland 12 12
