1.809 MeV Emission from 26Al in the galaxy

Date: 16 Oct 2003
Copyright: ESA

The image shows a map of the Galaxy obtained with CGRO-Comptel (1991-2000) in the light of the 26Al line. The insets show the clear detection of the 26Al line from the center of our Galaxy and from the Cygnus area with the SPI instrument on-board INTEGRAL after the first months of operation. The detection of the lines demonstrates the ability of the SPI instrument to detect gamma-ray lines even with modest exposures. Courtesy: the SPI team
