No. 26 - Preparing for second part of Commissioning Phase

No. 26 - Preparing for second part of Commissioning Phase

Report for fortnight 20 August to 3 SeptemberIn the first week of the reporting period the spacecraft was monitored only with a single New Norcia pass, during which a HGA pattern calibration test was carried out. In the second week all New Norcia passes (except for one) and one DSN pass were taken, to allow the start of the preparatory activities for the upcoming Commissioning Phase part 2, which is due to start on 6 September.

These activities included:

  • Upload of modified OBCPs for payload and Navcam control
  • Upload of payload on-board software maintenance files, required for pre-CVP instrument software maintenance
  • Periodic AOCS maintenance, including IMP cycling and SAS calibration

Finally on 2 and 3 September the first payload on-board software maintenance was executed with the ALICE instrument. Post-upload verification tests were carried out and confirmed the correct functioning of the new software.

The table below shows a chronology of the main activities in the reporting period:

Rosetta reached its maximum distance from Earth for this year, 76 million km, on 28 August. Now the distance is slowly decreasing with the spacecraft heading towards the first Earth flyby on 4 March 2005.

At the end of the last New Norcia pass in the reporting period (DOY 247) Rosetta was at 75.8 million km from the Earth. The one-way signal travel time was 4 minutes 12 seconds.
