Update on Cosmic Vision Programme

Update on Cosmic Vision Programme

10 May 2005

Prof. Giovanni Bignami, chairman of the Space Science Advisory Committee (SSAC), recently presented an update on the Cosmic Vision 2015-2025 science programme to a meeting of the Science Programme Committee (SPC). The presentation provided an overview of the current status, envisaged programme structure and a timeline for potential implementation.

The Cosmic Vision programme will concentrate on four themes:

  1. What are the conditions for life and planetary formation?
  2. How does the Solar System work?
  3. What are the fundamental laws of the Universe?
  4. How did the Universe originate and what is it made of?

Since these themes were presented in Paris last year, scientists across Europe have been discussing the way to tackle the underlying questions behind each theme. This latest update contains an outline of different strategies and mission concepts that could be adopted in a bid to fulfil the science objectives of the Cosmic Vision programme.

The presentation is available for download in PDF format.
