Mars Express Second Mission Extension

Mars Express Second Mission Extension

28 February 2007

The Science Programme Committee at its meeting on 23 February 2007 has unanimously approved an extension of the Mars Express mission operations, pushing back the mission end date to early-May 2009.

In addition to recognising the outstanding legacy that Mars Express is building for future generations of scientists, the Science Programme Committee also noted the invaluable heritage that the mission is leaving to future missions to Mars.

Mars Express is currently in the middle of its first extension period which shifted the mission end date to 31 October 2007 by adding one Martian year of 687 days to the mission's nominal end date in November 2005 (one Martian year from successful Mars orbit insertion on 25 December 2003).
