    PRODEX Involvement in Foton Mission

    18 Sep 2007

The Russian capsule Foton-M3 carrying a payload of more than 40 ESA experiments, was successfully launched Friday 14th September at 11:00 (UT) from Baikonur Cosmodrome, Kazakhstan for 12 day mission in low orbit around the Earth.

There are 3 Belgium experiments funded by PRODEX onboard Foton-M3:

Freqbone (Prof Vander Sloten, KUL) will test high frequency, low amplitude vibration on bovine bone samples as a countermeasure bone decay.

Radcells (Prof Van Oostveldt, Ugent) will study the damaging effects of space radiation on connective tissue in the skin (dermal fibroblasts).

Oesteogene (Prof Carmeliet, KUL) together with Obadis and Oclast will study the effect of weightlessness on bone-forming cells (osteoblasts) and bonedegrading cells (osteoclasts).
