XMM-Newton Status Report - March 2008

XMM-Newton Status Report - March 2008

Mission Status XMM-Newton operations are continuing smoothly with the spacecraft, instruments and ground segment all performing nominally.

Operations and Archiving

At its 120th meeting the SPC approved an extension of operations until 31 December 2012 with the Mission Operations team being combined with that of INTEGRAL from 1 January 2008. In addition, the routine instrument monitoring that was performed by the instrument controllers in ESAC is being replaced by automation running at ESOC. These changes mean that one spacecraft controller is now operating both spacecraft, rather than the two spacecraft and one instrument controller required previously. This revised operations concept, which includes a combined engineering support team, has been thoroughly tested over the last few months and is working smoothly with routine workloads that are comfortably handled by a single controller.

An update to the XMM-Newton data analysis software (SAS) was released on 28 November 2007 to cope with problems in the data reduction of some RGS exposures taken in the recently introduced single readout mode.
