Global MHD simulations of a THEMIS substorm event

    Date: 16 Oct 2008
    Satellite: THEMIS
    Copyright: M. El-Alaoui et al.

Results of global MHD simulations of the THEMIS substorm event on 1 March 2008. Positions of THEMIS probes (P3 and P4) situated in the near-Earth plasma sheet are marked by blue circles.

Simulations (two upper rows) showed the vortex-like plasma flow in the vicinity of the P3 and P4 locations. The bottom panel presents the comparison of the simulated (black) and observed (red) bulk flows.

This result was presented by M. El-Alaoui et al. at the First Joint Cluster-THEMIS workshop, held 23-26 September 2008 at the University of New Hampshire, Durham, USA.
