‘Around the World in 80 Telescopes’ – webcast archive online
On 3 April 2009 astronomers from ESA's INTEGRAL and XMM-Newton observatories took part in a marathon 24-hour live webcast, 'Around the World in 80 Telescopes'. The webcast took viewers on a worldwide odyssey visiting telescopes on every continent - and in space, including ESA's European Space Astronomy Centre (ESAC) near Madrid in Spain. This was part of the 100 Hours of Astronomy cornerstone project of the International Year of Astronomy (IYA). The recorded webcast is now available to view at your leisure.

Magnificent image of M82 from ESA’s XMM-Newton Telescope for the International Year of Astronomy 2009
To celebrate the International Year of Astronomy (IYA) ESA is releasing a magnificent image of the starburst galaxy Messier 82 (M82) obtained with the XMM-Newton space observatory. A dedicated observation of M82 was made with XMM-Newton on 3 April 2009 as part of the IYA 100 Hours of Astronomy cornerstone project.

'Be an INTEGRAL Astronomer' - an ESA competition for the International Year of Astronomy
To mark the International Year of Astronomy ESA is launching a special competition for students in secondary school and University undergraduates. Students will use data taken by the INTEGRAL space observatory to investigate objects in one of the most active regions of our Galaxy and be in with a chance to win a number of great prizes, including a trip to the European Space Astronomy Centre (ESAC) near Madrid, Spain.

On 3 April 2009 ESA astronomers will take part in a unique live webcast, 'Around the world in 80 telescopes'. You can choose Hubble's next discovery - the result
To celebrate the International Year of Astronomy people from around the world have selected the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope's next astronomical discovery. Voters selected their favourite from a choice of six candidate objects, all of which Hubble has never observed before.

New ESA bloggers join the Cosmic Diary
The Cosmic Diary is one of eleven cornerstone projects that are taking place around the world during the International Year of Astronomy 2009. Each cornerstone project is centred on a specific theme and the Cosmic Diary is all about what it is like to be an astronomer. Two brand new ESA Cosmic Diaries have just been launched.

To celebrate the International Year of Astronomy you are invited to participate in the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope's next astronomical discovery. Cast your vote online (before 1 March 2009) to choose your favourite from six candidate objects that will be observed with this telescope for the very first time.

A thrilling launch to the International Year of Astronomy (IYA2009) is taking place at the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) Headquarters in Paris on 15 and 16 January 2009. Events include showcases of two major ESA contributions to IYA2009: the Planck Dome and the Groningen Discovery Truck featuring Herschel.

The International Year of Astronomy (IYA2009) has arrived and with it the launch of the Cosmic Diary. Through this IYA2009 cornerstone project, professionals from all around the world will blog about their lives and work.
