Instruments selected for Mars
[ESA PR-17 2010]  ESA and NASA have selected the scientific instruments for their first joint Mars mission. Scheduled for 2016, it will study the chemical makeup of the martian atmosphere, including methane. Discovered in 2003, methane could point to life on the Red Planet.

ESA Council approves new plans for Mars Robotic Exploration Programme
ESA Member States have provisionally agreed to plans for ESA's role in an international Mars Robotic Exploration Programme. The decision, taken at a recent ESA Council meeting, foresees a Mars Orbiter with a small static lander, to launch in 2016, and the change of launch date for the ExoMars Rover mission.

ESA and NASA establish a joint Mars exploration initiative
On 29 and 30 June the ESA Director of Science and Robotic Exploration, David Southwood met NASA's Associate Administrator for Science, Ed Weiler, in Plymouth, UK, to establish a way for a progressive programme for exploration of the Red Planet. The outcome of the bilateral meeting was an agreement to create a Mars Exploration Joint Initiative (MEJI) that will provide a framework for the two agencies to define and implement their scientific, programmatic and technological goals at Mars.
