No. 149 - Preparations for first rendezvous manoeuvre

Report for the period 18 December 2010 to 16 January 2011This report covers 30 days of Rosetta mission operations. The spacecraft has been fully configured for the execution of the first rendezvous manoeuvre, planned to start on 17 January.

During the reporting period, mission operations were conducted using the ESA New Norcia (NNO) ground station and the DSS-15 (Goldstone, 34 metres), DSS-24 (Goldstone, 34 metres), DSS-25 (Goldstone, 34 metres), DSS-26 (Goldstone, 34 metres), DSS-43 (Canberra, 70 metres), DSS-55 (Madrid, 34 metres) and DSS-65 (Madrid, 34 metres) NASA Deep Space Network (DSN) antennas.

At the end of the reporting period on 16 January, Rosetta was at 611 million km from Earth (4.08 AU); the one-way signal travel time was 33 min 58 sec (2038 sec). The spacecraft's distance from the Sun was 577 million km (3.86 AU).

Future milestones

The spacecraft is now fully configured for the execution of the first rendezvous manoeuvre that is planned for the next reporting period. Due to its magnitude, this manoeuvre has been split into five nominal burns plus an optional extra one in the event that a final correction is needed. The detailed plan for the burns is given in the table below.
