Biography & lecture abstract

Lidong Xia was born in Zhejiang Province, China (1967). He studied space physics at the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) in Hefei. He carried out his Ph.D. thesis research at the Max- Planck-Institute for Solar System Research (MPS) in Katlenburg-Lindau (Germany) and obtained his PhD in Astronomy and Astrophysics in 2003 at the University of Göttingen (Germany). Then, he worked as a postdoctoral researcher at MPS and Armagh Observatory (Northern Ireland, UK). After this, he became an associated professor at USTC. In 2007, he took up the appointment of Professor of Space Science Program at Shandong University at Weihai, and has been serving as Vice-Dean of the School of Space Science and Physics since 2008. His scientific research is in the field of solar upper atmosphere including analyzing and interpreting the spectroscopic data observed in UV/EUV wavelengths. Dr. Xia is also interested in space mission studies (e.g., Chinese KuaFu Project).

Lecture: Overview of space science activities in Shandong University at Weihai
Established only recently in 2003, the School of Space Science and Physics in Shandong University at Weihai has evolved into a strong force in terms of research capabilities in the Space Science community in China and abroad. It consists of 25 permanent faculty members, largely focused on solar-terrestrial physics and space weather, observational astrophysics, lunar and planetary sciences as well as particle physics and nuclear astrophysics. Despite being relatively small in size, the School proudly hosts an advanced optical telescope with the largest aperture among Chinese Universities, is one of the institutions in the payload definition team for the Chinese KuaFu project, established and maintains close collaborations with Space Science heavy-weights from institutions like Washington University in St. Louis (USA). Consequently, the School of Space Science and Physics boasts a strong track record in attracting funding, being awarded research funds worth more than 12 million CNY over the past 5 years, mainly from the National Science Foundation of China.
