Biography & lecture abstract

Lei Li was born in Jiangsu Province (1964). She graduated from the Department of Mechanics in Tsinghua University. In 1994, she began to work the Center for Space Science and Applied Research (CSSAR), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), mainly engaged in the research of particle dynamics, magnetosphere modeling, Martian plasma environment etc. Currently, Dr. Li is participating in the Yinghuo-1 Mars exploration mission as the principal investigator of the Plasma Experiment.

Lecture: The Plasma Experiment onboard the Yinghuo-1 Mars Orbiter
The Yinghuo-1 Mars orbiter will carry a plasma package consisting of two identical ion detectors, and one electron detector, which is aimed at monitoring the plasma with energy up to a few keV in the environment of the planet, provides a mass analysis of the ions in the mass range form 1 to 44 au. Together with the magnetic field experiment on board YH-1, the plasma package will be the first to give full insight into the local plasma characteristics near the planet, as well as to determine the possible the total ion escape (particles/s) for the major ion species. Together with Russian spacecraft Phobos-Grunt, there will be chances for dual spacecraft simultaneous investigation of solar wind- Mars interaction, by observing phenomena such as bow shock, MPB, and ion escape in the tail. Scientific topics of dual spacecraft observation will be discussed as well in the presentation.
