Walking around the science instrument

Walking around the science instrument

This short film clip shows a close-up of the CHEOPS science instrument. The flat, tilted surfaces of the silver radiator are seen at the rear of the instrument and the black, cylindrical telescope tube extends as far as the silver-edged, angular structure that supports the baffle. The cylindrical baffle, which is slightly longer than the telescope tube, will reject stray light from angles greater than 35 degrees from the line of sight. A copper-coloured lid covers the entrance aperture of the baffle to minimise contamination of the telescope optics up to and during launch. After launch, the cover will be released by a spring-loaded mechanism that can be seen at the edge of the lid, close to the white label.
