Interplanetary shock impacting on the Earth's magnetosphere

This figure illustrates the effect of an interplanetary shock impacting on the Earth's magnetosphere.

The red curve symbolises the Earth's bow shock. The relative positions of a number of satellites studying the Sun-Earth region are indicated. The propagation speed and direction of the wave front induced by the shock have been determined thanks to the data collected by this armada of spacecraft.
