This cartoon, not to scale, indicates the difference in limits of the ionosphere on the dayside and night-side of Mars. The radius of Mars is about 3000 km; the ionosphere starts about 100 km above the surface and can extend to about 700 km on the dayside and 250 km on the nightside.
