Instances of gas falling towards the Sun (October 1999)

Date: 20 October 1999
Copyright: SOHO/ESA

In this sequence of images you can clearly see fast-moving streams of gas pouring out from the Sun into space. Look closely and you can also catch clouds of gas falling towards the Sun.

These images are from the LASCO C2 component, which monitors the region from 700 000 to 3 500 000 kilometres from the visible surface of the Sun. The central grey circle represents the LASCO coronagraph mask, which shields the instrument from the glare of direct sunlight. The white ring denotes the size and position of the visible Sun.
