Giant solar flare - from the SOHO archive

Giant solar flare - from the SOHO archive

Date: 18 November 2009
Copyright: ESA

On 14 July 2000 an X-class solar flare was recorded near the center of the solar disk by the SOHO Extreme-ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (EIT), observing the Sun in Fe XII at 195 Angstroms. The 'fuzzy' appearance of the images after the flare are due to a burst of energetic particles from the explosion hitting the spacecraft.

The sequence above was generated from the ESA SOHO science archive.
