The Ulysses Magnetic Coil Facility at ESTEC
This facility is one of 5 small magnetic measurement systems deployed in Europe and is used to test and characterise equipment units before integration on spacecraft requiring magnetic cleanliness.
The equipment in the centre of the Helmholtz coils is the LISA Pathfinder Inertial Sensor Sensing and Actuation Unit, pictured during magnetic characterisation tests in August 2009. A magnetometer records the magnetic field from the equipment under test as it is rotated between the Helmholtz coils. A second one, seen here on the tripod, monitors the variations of the ambient magnetic field.
