Mission Studies Division (SCI-FM)
The Mission Studies Division (SCI-FM) in the Future Missions Department of ESA's Science Directorate is responsible for the System Definition Studies of the science missions from the Call for Missions to the Mission Adoption by the Science Programme Committee (SPC).
SCI-FM tasks include in particular:
- Supporting the preparation of Calls for Missions (for example, the technical annexes) and leading the technical and programmatic evaluation of the science mission proposals that are submitted by the scientific community
- Conducting system studies for Phases 0, A, and B1, done internally at ESA or through industrial contracts, for the selected mission candidates
- The preparation of and participation in key reviews during the preparation phase
- Contributing to the mission technology preparation activities, in coordination with the Technology Preparation Section (SCI-FT) by:
- Providing inputs for the technology needs for future missions under study
- For all missions under preparation, ensuring consistency between the Science Directorate (SCI) technology work plans and the science mission needs
- Implementing technology activities
- Supporting PRODEX activities by providing dedicated expertise
SCI-FM is currently composed of:
- Solar System Missions section (SCI-FMP)
- Astrophysics and Fundamental Physics Missions section (SCI-FMA)
