Detectors and Optics

Welcome to the homepage of the Payload and Advanced Concept Office's Detectors and Optics group. Here you'll find up-to-date information about the group's laboratory activities as well as news about the on-going S-Cam telescope campaigns.

The main areas of research are:

  • Compound Semiconductors as X and Gamma Ray detectors.
  • X-ray STJ Detectors: focussing on distributed read-out devices (DROIDS).
  • X-ray Optics:  Including recent results obtained using micro-channel plates.
  • Optical/UV Detectors:  Focussing on the group's on-going research into superconducting tunnel junction (STJ) technology.
  • In addition, the group has developed a unique STJ-based camera for ground based astronomical observations, known as S-Cam. Since 1999, versions of the instrument have been tested successfully on the William Herschel Telescope on La Palma in the Canaries Islands.

Click here to find out about some of the exciting new observations which S-Cam has made, including an energy resolved movie of the eclipsing system UZ For based on WHT/S-Cam observations.
