Detectors and Optics
The main areas of research are:
- Compound Semiconductors as X and Gamma Ray detectors.
- X-ray STJ Detectors: focussing on distributed read-out devices (DROIDS).
- X-ray Optics: Including recent results obtained using micro-channel plates.
- Optical/UV Detectors: Focussing on the group's on-going research into superconducting tunnel junction (STJ) technology.
- In addition, the group has developed a unique STJ-based camera for ground based astronomical observations, known as S-Cam. Since 1999, versions of the instrument have been tested successfully on the William Herschel Telescope on La Palma in the Canaries Islands.
