Engineering prototype, or 'breadboard' of the Powder Sample Dosing and Distribution System (PSDDS) component of the ExoMars rover Sample Preparation and Distribution System (SPDS), which will form part of the Analytical Laboratory Drawer (ALD).

The PSDDS collects the powder from the Crushing Station (CS) (the outlet chute of which is visible at the top of the image) and rotates to deliver a measured quantity of powder into the Refillable Container that is mounted on the Powdered Sample Handling System (PSHS). The PSHS is a carousel that will move the samples to various stations for processing and analysis.

The container at the bottom of the image collects samples that have to be released from the CS if they cannot be crushed or due to jamming.

The test system is fitted with a number of cameras, each with an LED lighting system, to monitor the movements of the mechanisms and view the sample as it moves through the SPDS. Part of one camera's lighting system is visible behind the PSDDS.
