EDM model in aerothermodynamics tests
The aerodynamic characteristics of the EDM at subsonic speeds (Mach 0.4 to 0.7) were studied during wind tunnel tests in 2009.
The front shield is jettisoned while flying at subsonic speeds. The proximity of the two objects during flight generates interference that modifies their aerodynamic parameters. The tests, performed in the high-speed tunnel of the German-Dutch Wind Tunnels (DNW-NLR) in Amsterdam, demonstrated the dynamics of the front shield separation phase.
