The FREND flight spare model (FM 2) undergoes standalone tests and incoming inspection after its delivery to Baikonur before it replaces the flight model (FM 1).
Four proportional counters filled with ³He are installed within the holes on the periphery of the instrument, and the central hole is for a high-energy neutron detector based on stilbene crystal.
