Satellite: ExoMars rover

The 2020 mission of the ExoMars programme will deliver a European rover and a Russian surface platform to the surface of Mars. This image shows the rover viewed from the side.

ESA's rover will be the first capable of drilling 2 m into Mars, where ancient biomarkers may still be preserved from the harsh radiation environment on the surface. The drill, the dark grey box on the right of the rover body, is shown in a horizontal position here.

ExoMars is a joint endeavour between ESA and Roscosmos, with important contribution from NASA.

Note: a version of this image with a transparent background and a clean cut out of the rover is available here [6000×3376 png, 6.1 MB].
