Typical VIRTIS spectrum of the illuminated part of the Earth's atmosphere. In this spectrum the H2O bands are very strong, as expected.

This spectrum was taken on 5 March 2005 after Rosetta's closest approach to Earth by VIRTIS from a distance of 250 000 kilometres.
