Researcher Alessandro Maturilli placing different mineral samples in a test facility, where they will be heated up to the high temperatures (400-500 °C) encountered at the surface of Venus. Each hot sample emits infrared light with its own characteristic spectral signature, which is measured. By comparing these spectral signatures with those seen in the data returned by instruments like VIRTIS on Venus Express, researchers hope to be able to identify minerals on the surface of Venus.
