Many technologies have become so advanced that they've been miniaturized to take up less space and weigh less. That's what happened to detector controls and data conversion electronics on the James Webb Space Telescope being built by Northrop Grumman.

Eta Carinae is a complex binary system, at a distance of around 8000 light years, with a large nebulosity surrounding the central objects. Observations with INTEGRAL have confirmed the nature of hard X-ray emission from the region to be from inverse compton scattered photons accelerated in a region where two stellar winds collide.

Astronomers using the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope have compiled a large catalogue of gravitational lenses in the distant Universe. The catalogue contains a staggering 67 new gravitationally lensed images found around massive elliptical and lenticular-shaped galaxies.

Observations from the Hubble and Spitzer Space Telescopes have revealed a lensed galaxy to be one of the most distant galaxies known, residing at a redshift of ~7.6

The giant elliptical galaxy NGC 1132 is at the heart of a fossil group together with dwarf galaxies and thousands of globular clusters, all embedded in an enormous halo of dark matter

Discovered in images taken with the Hubble Space Telescope's Advanced Camera for Surveys the gravitational lens system SDSSJ0946+1006 displays a unique double Einstein ring due to a fortuitous aligning of two distant galaxies and a foreground elliptical galaxy.

Data gathered with the Hubble's Advanced Camera for Surveys has allowed the mapping of dark matter in supercluster Abell 901/902, shedding light on the history and evolution of galaxies in this supercluster

The Hubble Space Telescope's Advanced Camera for Surveys has resolved mysterious "blue blobs" in a structure called Arp's Loop between the galaxies M81 and M82 and and found them to be brilliant blue clusters of stars born in the gas swirls and eddies induced by a galactic interaction 200 million years ago.

The nearby transiting planet HD 189733b has been observed during three transits with Hubble's ACS in spectroscopic mode. Study of the data has provided strong evidence for the presence of a high level haze layer on this Jupiter-sized exoplanet.

The verification model of the Mid-InfraRed Instrument (MIRI) is ready to undergo its cryogenic performance tests at the Rutherford Appelton Laboratory UK. MIRI is the first of JWST's four instruments to reach this significant milestone in the testing phase

A 10-day workshop dedicated to introducing the next generation of astrometry specialists to the science of the future Gaia mission successfully concluded this week.

Multiple observations with the Advanced Camera for Surveys on-board the Hubble Space Telescope have been combined into a large detailed image of the grand-design spiral galaxy M74

The NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope has probed the bright core of Comet 17P/Holmes which, to the delight of sky watchers, mysteriously brightened by nearly a million-fold in a 24-hour period beginning 23 October 2007.

Recent multi-colour observations by Hubble's Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2 have captured the pair of interacting galaxies Arp 87 in detail, with its bridge of tidal material, stars, gas and dust

The launch of INTEGRAL five years ago heralded a new era in gamma-ray observatories. Utilising solid-state detectors and coded mask imaging techniques, INTEGRAL was unlike any previous gamma-ray mission.

The NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope has found out the true nature of a dwarf galaxy that astronomers had for a long time identified as one of the youngest galaxies in the Universe. Astronomers using the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope have made observations of the galaxy I Zwicky 18 which seem to indicate that it is in fact much older and much...
