[ESA PR-17 2010]  ESA and NASA have selected the scientific instruments for their first joint Mars mission. Scheduled for 2016, it will study the chemical makeup of the martian atmosphere, including methane. Discovered in 2003, methane could point to life on the Red Planet.

ESA and NASA have today issued an announcement of opportunity soliciting proposals for scientific instruments for the ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter, one element of the joint ESA-NASA ExoMars programme.

The ESA Council has just given the go-ahead to proceed with the implementation of the ExoMars programme. This decision paves the way for two Mars exploration missions in cooperation with NASA in 2016 and 2018.

ESA Member States have provisionally agreed to plans for ESA's role in an international Mars Robotic Exploration Programme. The decision, taken at a recent ESA Council meeting, foresees a Mars Orbiter with a small static lander, to launch in 2016, and the change of launch date for the ExoMars Rover mission.

From 1 to 24 August 2009, an international team of scientists participated in the Arctic Mars Analogue Svalbard Expedition (AMASE) in Norway, conducting scientific research and testing instruments for future ESA and NASA Mars robotic missions.
