The Herschel spacecraft set up for the cooldown of the cryostat vacuum vessel (CVV). After the bake out to remove unwanted volatiles from the system, the CVV is prepared for the filling of the cooling system with helium. The temperature in the cryostat has gradually been lowered over the subsequent weeks, with the outer vessel staying at ambient temperature.
