Optical light curve of Nova V598 Pup

Optical light curve of Nova V598 Pup

This graph shows the optical light curve of the star USNO-A2.0 0450-03360039 from archival data in the All Sky Automated Survey (ASAS).

This star is the progenitor of the nova V598 Pup discovered in XMM-Newton slew observations made on 9 October 2007. The discovery by XMM-Newton comes more than 120 days after the nova explosion occurred, which was between 2 and 5 June 2007 as seen in the archival data.

Indicated in the plot are the dates of the observation with XMM-Newton and follow-up observations with the Magellan Clay telescope. The latter observations were performed in the optical, to confirm the optical counterpart of the XMM-Newton source. The nova nature of the object was determined through the optical emission lines observed with the Magellan Clay telescope and confirmed by the ASAS light curve.
