X-ray contours and deep optical image of 2XMM J083026+524133

Date: 25 August 2008
Satellite: XMM-Newton
Depicts: XMM-Newton/EPIC X-ray contours on ground-based optical image of the massive galaxy cluster 2XMM J083026+524133 at z~1
Copyright: G. Lamer et al. [2008]

X-ray contours of 2XMM J083026.2+524133 overlaid on an r- and z-band colour composite image. The X-ray contours are from the 2XMM catalogue that is based on XMM-Newton EPIC observations.

The r- and z-band data (optical and near-infrared) are from observations in May 2008 with the world's largest telescope, the Large Binocular Telescope (LBT) in southeast Arizona, USA.

The LBT data reveal there is an increased density of red galaxies within the X-ray contours of the 2XMM catalogue. The magnitudes and colours of these galaxies are all consistent with a redshift of ~1.

This composite view covers about 3.6' × 3.6' on the sky.
