A scheme of the electromagnetic spectrum with indication of wavelengths, frequencies and energies. The highlight box shows the part of the spectrum from infrared to ultraviolet wavelengths. The wavelength ranges covered by several ESA missions – including joint projects with other space agencies – are indicated: ESA's Herschel Space Observatory, which operated between 2009 and 2013; ESA's Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) which operated between 1995 and 1998; JAXA's Akari satellite, which operated between ; the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope, launched in 1990 and still operational; the Optical Monitor (OM) on ESA's XMM-Newton X-ray Space Observatory, launched in 1999 and still operational; and the ESA/NASA-UK International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE), which operated between 1978 and 1996.
