The two-day workshop presented an overview of the existing plans for human exploration of the Solar System and the future development of space telescopes. Several possible architectures for both enterprises were presented and covered the first half of the 21st century. Apart from the main presentations, four groups were assembled to focus on four main areas: The Moon, Mars, Near Earth Objects and Space Telescopes. The need for, and feasibility of, human participation in future missions in these four fields were studied and a final report created.
Next to the scientific and technological aspect, the workshop also elaborated on the need for public engagement and international collaboration as both would be beneficial to any of the proposed architectures, or even required.
As human exploration appeals to the sense of adventure, it can be used as a stimulator for raising the public's interest in future deep space missions. A more pronounced human front of the mission doesn't stand in the way of the science that is done, or the technological achievements that are made.
With a wide range of nationalities participating in the workshop, another step was taken towards the ultimate goal of achieving manned missions to other bodies in our Solar System.
