Extended deadline for Abstract Submission: 16 February 2004

ABSTRACT SUBMISSION

Papers will be selected either as contributed paper or as poster on the basis of abstracts not exceeding 1 page.
The abstracts should outline clearly and precisely the major interests and novelty of the papers on the topics:

• Christiaan Huygens, the person, scientist and interactions
• The Cassini-Huygens mission in historical perspective, the contribution of Gerard Kuiper
• Recent results of Saturn/Titan observations (ground- and space-based) and theoretical studies
• Amateur astronomers' observations of Saturn and Titan

Abstracts should be sent before 31 January 2004 to ESA Conference Bureau and may be submitted:

• Name and proposed topic/subtopic for the paper
• Title of paper
• Authors full name
• Name and affiliation of author(s)
• Addresses, e-mail, telephone and fax numbers
• Name of the prime author or contact person

The author(s) should also indicate whether the papers are proposed for an oral or a poster presentation.

Authors will be notified of the decision of the programme committee by 5 March 2004. Authors whose papers have been accepted will then receive instructions for the preparation of their full-length paper for inclusion in the proceedings of the event.

PRELIMINARY PROGRAMME

This conference will start with a tribute to Christiaan Huygens, his contributions and interactions in the 17th century followed by recent results of observations of Saturn/Titan from ground and space, an overview of the Cassini/Huygens mission. The conference will end with a public outreach day aimed at the amateur astronomy community that will have the opportunity to present, in the forms of posters or exhibits, their latest observations of Saturn and Titan.

REGISTRATION

Depending on what days you would like to participate, you can register, using the registration form, with one of the two options:

• Register for the entire conference, including public day (150 Euro, 35 Euro for students)

• Register for the public day only (15 Euro)

During the Public Day posterboards and tables are available to present the results of observations and other activities by individual and groups of amateur astronomers.

ABSTRACT SUBMISSION

For ESA, the highlight of 2004 and early 2005 will be the arrival of the NASA/ESA Cassini-Huygens spacecraft at Saturn and the release of the Huygens probe into the atmosphere of Titan.

The aim of the conference is to bring together historians and space scientists to discuss:

• Christiaan Huygens, the person, the scientist and his relationship with other scientists in the 17th century, such as Cassini, Descartes, Newton.
• Observations of Saturn and its moons since the 17th century.
• The Cassini-Huygens missions and the latest observations on the way to the encounter.
