The Advanced Telescope for High Energy Astrophysics (ATHENA) is a large-class mission of the European Space Agency (ESA), with launch planned for 2028. ATHENA has been designed to address the science theme "The Hot and Energetic Universe", which poses two key questions:
- How does ordinary matter assemble into the large-scale structures we see today?
- How do black holes grow and influence the Universe?
