Inoltre conosciamo in maniera abbastanza
microscopio.

22/11/2015
Caro Diario,
all’agenzia spaziale è davvero tosta!
idolo come Domenico Cassini, matematico, fisico, ingegnere e astronomo.
corpi ghiacciati, craterizzati in superficie.
Sta a noi confermare o smentire queste ipotesi!
Rea passerà davanti a

l’energia rilasciata è immensa, sufficiente a destabilizzare parzialmente o
originatosi in precedenza.

26th May 2200
I have always wondered how our planet was born, yesterday
I tried to give an answer to my question.
So I went to the library to look for some information. I
went in , I went to the science departement , I looked
for the astronomy category and finally I found what I was
looking for. At the name “X” I clicked the botton “start”
and a big hologram of my planet seen from the space
appeared in front of me and showed me all its history in
15 minutes.
Suddently I found out that my planet hadn’t always been
lived by humans , but our ancestors moved there years ago
with lots of spaceships which I saw landing in the
hologram.
I went to the book’s area, where people rarely go,where
there are millions of ancient books.
Silence and the solitude of the place helped me in my
quest , and I understood that humans were born somewhere
else!
I couldn’t believe it!
Human kind was much more ancient than what I thought and
it once lived on a planet called “Earth” , which was the
same of X but life was born there. I also found a
document written by an astronomer who worked for the
Cassini’s project , the name of a space prob that was
sent into orbit near Saturn lots of years ago, to explore
it;the document said:
“We must point the space prob towards Jupiter , staying
near Saturn . In this way we might obtain pictures
similar to the ones we get of the exoplanets seen from
Earth. Exploring Jupiter from that distance we could
improve our knowledge of exoplanets with athmosphere , we
could develope better scientific tools for our studies ,
we cuold look for exoplanets similar to Earth where we
might live one day.
Recently we have discovered an exoplanet which is the
most similar to Earth and which stay in the abitable zone
of a star similar to our Sun. If we developed our
scientific tools , we would be able to study this
exoplanet in a better way and we might obtain important
informations about the future of our planet.
Observing Jupiter from that distance could help N.A.S.A
in the planning of better tools to improve our knowledge
about these distan planets and about our world.”
So this are the results of my quest.
Well ,this is just incredible!
Luckily , 185 years ago , our ancestors had pointed the
Cassini space prob towards Jupiter, thanks to that human
kind is still alive.

13 - 15 years old - Movie of Saturn's moon, Tethys, passing behind Rhea

In recent years, thanks to several space probes, we’ve obtained a lot of information about the Saturn’s satellites, but nevertheless they’re considered by scientists as very mysterious bodies.
Today we would like to explain the reason why we believe Cassini should observe the occultation of satellites Rhea and Tethys, where the latter will pass behind Rhea.
Here is what we know today about these two mysterious satellites .Rhea was discovered by the Italian astronomer Cassini in 1672 and is the second moon of Saturn in size. It's a small, cold world, covered with craters and composed for three quarters of ice and rock. This moon is covered by grooves which can reach tens or hundreds of kilometers long. The photographs depicting the presence of canyons were demonstrated by Cassini, thanks to which, over the years we have received more and more information. In the 26 November 2010 the Cassini spacecraft detected around Rhea an atmosphere composed of oxygen and carbon dioxide, influenced by Saturn's magnetic field.
Tethys was discovered by Cassini in 1684 and is composed almost entirely of ice, while in the past was believed to be partially liquid. The surface of Tethys is one of the most reflective in the Solar System. We stress that we have more information about Rhea than Tethys, due to the fact that Rhea was observed directly and very closely several times, while Tethys has not been observed with the same frequency.
We believe it is advisable to look at Cassini (with 27 photos taken every 60 seconds) this occultation because these observations could allow us to study their orbits as a result of constant change, therefore possibly identify past events that have characterized these two satellites and hopefully provide us with a ground theory for future phenomena. This observation could also be used as a case study for similar events on satellites of other planets, when observed from Earth. Also this will be a unique event, especially if we consider the fact that there is the chance to have Cassini satellite on the way!
And let's not forget that this observations could provide important clues to find out the cause of the presence of "scratches tiger", i.e. red stripes found on the surface of Tethys.
Thanks to this proximity to Rhea, Cassini will have a further opportunity to study accurately its recently discovered atmosphere, and its changes over a short period of time.
So why not give us this unique opportunity to provide an answer to all our question?

16 - 18 years old - Saturn's rings, with three of Saturn's moons: Tethys, Enceladus, and Mimas

Author:

Emma Pignacca

I’ve chosen target number one. I have been focusing my interest in particular on
Enceladus and Mimas, these two moons are quite similar: they both hide an ocean
under their surface, this is true for Enceladus, for Mimas more a possibility. Plus
Enceladus presents characteristics favourable for life’s development in addition to
water: the presence of organic composites. Therefore I think it is very important to
study this planet, because it could be a model: if it hosted living organisms it would be
very helpful to comprehend how life can develop in celestial bodies different from
Earth; in the other case, Enceladus could represent to recognize in future “false
alarms”, planets or moons that seem favourable to the development of life but actually
are not. Another thing that made me choose this target is that we see more Saturn’s
components. We can see the importance of this thing thinking that this planet is over
the frost line, so it may have preserved some characteristics little subsequent to the
formation of the Solar System, and studying this rings and moons together could be
helpful to comprehend the physic and chemical evolution of the Solar System. It is
extremely important to see all this components together, we can understand how they
work just considering that the different elements deeply affect each other, just think
that Enceladus is creating another ring around the planet.

All three goals seem very interesting: for example, the first because of the beauty and the
complexity of Saturn's rings and moons, and the third for the particularity of Rhea's
surface, but if the Cassini sonde's instruments could be aimed only towards one of the
three target I think it would be appropriate to point them toward the second.
Initially this may seem less appealing than the other two, but I think it has great potential.
The main reason that prompted me to choose this target is the fact that besides being
interesting it could be very useful for scientific research.
In fact nowadays several teams of scientists are looking for planets with characteristics
similar of Earth's (as the presence of water in its three states, the presence of particular
molecules, acceptable temperature etc.), But to do this kind of research you have to leave
the solar system because as well as the '' blue ball '' no other planet in our system is able
to support life.
Consequently we have to go looking towards systems that are very far and where even
the most advanced satellites aren't able to get close enough. Then you should analyze a
celestial body from abysmal distances, which would exceed a billion kilometers and to
perform reliable studies from such distances requires a lot of knowledge and also different
tools, more powerful than those we already have.
Then to improve our notions and therefore also our notions it's very useful to perform
experiments.
Just now we can understand the usefulness of the second target. In fact, Cassini sonde is
located at the considerable distance of 1.5 billion kilometers from Jupiter and at this point it
can be studied as an exoplanet, that is, as if it were a planet outside the solar system.
Thereby focusing on it the sonde's instrumentation, from the images obtained can be
made many considerations and hypothesis on the planet: for example, you can make
predictions about the trajectory and duration of its orbit, estimate its size or check if it has
moons or rings like Saturn. Subsequently the results of these analyzes can be compared
with results from previous studies, performed by sondes located in positions closer to
jupiter.
In this way you can verify the accuracy of the data obtained and if the results are not
correct you can review the calculation methods and study, a bit like trying to solve a
difficult problem, already knowing the solutions.
I give much importance to this target because it could be taken as an experiment to
develop new technologies with which the horizons of human knowledge can be extended.

16 - 18 years old - Movie of Saturn's moon, Tethys, passing behind Rhea

Author:

Nicoletta Corradino

The space mission Cassini-Hyugens is one of the most important and well known for its results. The
spacecraft was launched eighteen years ago: in 2005 the lander Hyugens reached Titan, the largest
Saturn’s satellite, while Cassini was orbiting around the “gas giant”, revealing fundamental data
about its rings and satellites.
Now, it is time to choose another target for Cassini and, fortunately, something unique is going to
happen: Tethys will pass behind Rhea. The occultation is an infrequent spectacle and its registration
in a sequence of 27 images can give a lot of information about these satellites. Unlike Enceladus,
we know little about them, even though the Italian astronomer Giovanni Cassini discovered these
moons in 1684.
According to our knowledge, Tethys and Rhea are mostly made of water ice, but they do not seem
to have geyser activity as Enceladus. Eclipses show phenomena that are usually invisible in other
observations: for example, only during solar eclipses we are able to clearly see the sun’s corona and
its prominences. Moreover, there are many unanswered questions about Rhea, since in some
pictures this satellite seems to have its own ring: a symmetric deformation of the moon appears, like
if there were few detritus orbiting around it. This could be verified by focusing Cassini on the
occultation, because, if Rhea had really something similar to a ring, the registered images would
present anomalies: this would be the first ringed moon ever observed!
The origins of these satellites are not sure as well: present hypothesis connect them to a possible
aggregation of particles from the E-ring, which Enceladus is supposed to have formed and increased
with its activity. On the other hand, there are no verified proofs; maybe they are slowly disgregating
and in thousands millions years there will be new, thin, Saturn’s rings!
However, there is more: red “arcs” have recently been observed upon Tethys’ surface, they are even
called “blood trails”. Their origin is mysterious: some scientists affirm that they might be inorganic
fluids from the inside of the moon, but this is difficult to say since the satellite has neither faults nor
craters from where they could originate. The hypothesis that the impact with external agents might
have caused them is more probable: these “stripes” may be the result of the space weathering, to
which planets and satellites without atmosphere are subjected. In facts, for example on the earth’s
Moon, one of the effects of the space weathering on the spectral properties is to make the lunar
surface appear redder! Maybe this is only a coincidence, perhaps this weathering is caused by
particles from the E-ring or from galactic or extragalactic rays. Maybe the action of a particular
group of cosmic rays in this area is even one of the causes of Saturn’s rings. We need more data to
verify each theory. For these reasons, I hope that the orbiter Cassini will register Tethys’ occultation
before its crash on Saturn in 2017.
