History of ESA Symp. London's Science Museum

9 November 1998

An International Symposium on "the History of ESA" is being held at the Science Museum in London, 11-13 November 1998.

Organised by ESA and the Science Museum, the symposium brings together some of the leading figures from European governments, industry and the academic world who have made significant contributions to the development of the European space programme.

The speakers will address the context in which key developments took place and will cover all major policies and programmes undertaken by the Agency and its predecessors since the 1960s.

A team of professional historians have been working on the history of ESA for the last eight years, and the results of their work will be discussed.

A key element in the drive to record the history of ESA was the establishment of the official ESA archive in Florence. A brochure on 'the Archives of the European Space Agency' was prepared for especially for the Symposium and can be ordered from ESA Publications Division (ESA BR-139).

ESA Publications Division will also publish the Proceedings of the symposium within three months of the meeting (ESA SP-436).
