JWST's heart endures its last cryogenic test before installation into the telescope

Date: 31 March 2016

This video shows footage of the James Webb Space Telescope's Integrated Science Instrument Module (ISIM) as it is being lifted out of the giant cryo-vacuum chamber, at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. For months, the module was tested inside the Space Environment Simulator (SES) where it completed its last cryogenic test before installation into the telescope.

ISIM houses the four JWST instruments: NIRSpec (Near Infrared Spectrograph), MIRI (Mid-Infrared Instrument), NIRCam (Near-Infrared Camera), and FGS/NIRISS (Fine Guidance System/Near-InfraRed Imager and Slitless Spectrograph).

The ISIM is wrapped in special blanketing to keep everything spotlessly clean during the handling and moving.
