Planck payload endorsed by SPC

9 June 1998

At its 28/29 May meeting the ESA Science Programme Committee (SPC) endorsed the Planck payload proposed by the scientific community.

The Planck payload consists of two instruments designed to image the temperature irregularities of the cosmic microwave background, a relic from the early universe.

The Low-Frequency Instrument (LFI) consists of an array of radio receivers sensitive to frequencies between 30 and 100 GHz. The LFI was proposed by a consortium of scientists led by N. Mandolesi (CNR Bologna).

The High-Frequency Instrument (HFI) incorporates arrays of bolometers sensitive to frequencies between 100 and 850 GHz. The HFI was proposed by a consortium of scientists led by J.L. Puget (IAS, Orsay).
