Planck Leaves ESTEC for Alcatel Alenia Space

On 12 September 2006, the Planck FM telescope, housed in the Planck Spacecraft Container, was loaded onto a truck and left ESTEC to be transported to the premises of Planck prime contractor Alcatel Alenia Space France in Cannes, France.

The duration of the road transport was scheduled to be 10 to 11 days, arriving on 22 September. The long duration is a consequence of the various limitations imposed by the respective national oversized road transport regulations and by the thermal control requirements which are there to avoid submitting the flight hardware to unwanted temperature or humidity extremes. The convoy is a bit early and expected to arrive today 20 September or tomorrow 21 September.
