No. 166 - Swap to High Gain Antenna 2

No. 166 - Swap to High Gain Antenna 2

Report for Period 11 january to 17 January 2009Nominal operations were conducted during the reporting period. The spacecraft is still in quadrature phase, performing communications passes in a tilted configuration since 19 December 2008. On 13 January the High Gain Antenna (HGA) swap from HGA1 to HGA2 was executed.

VIRTIS continues to be operated in the visual channels only. A test with the redundant VIRTIS unit was executed on 10 January and the data was downloaded on 11 January.

On DOY 013 the weather at the Cebreros site was windy and snowy, which resulted in a significant instability and attenuation of the received signal. To avoid telemetry (TM) drops the bit rate for the pass was reduced from 38 kbps (nominal) to 28 kbps. The pass continued nominally, and the TM bit rate was restored to 38 kbps at the next Cebreros pass.

The table below shows a chronology of the main activities:

MET (Day) Date DOY Main Activity
1160 11/01/09 011

Communications pass over Cebreros.
Downloaded data from 2nd VIRTIS cooler test

1161 12/01/09 012

Communications pass over Cebreros

1162 13/01/09 013

Swap between HGA1 and HGA2.
Telemetry bitrate lowered to 28 kbps due to Cebreros weather conditions

1163 14/01/09 014

Communications pass over Cebreros.
Telemetry bitrate restored to 38 kbps

1164 15/01/09 015

Communications pass over Cebreros.

1165 16/01/09 016

Communications pass over Cebreros.

1166 17/01/09 017

Communications pass over Cebreros

At the end of the last Cebreros pass in the reporting period (DOY 017) Venus Express was orbiting Venus at 99.6 million km from the Earth. The one-way signal travel time was 332 seconds.
