This picture shows a window of a gas cell which contains carbon dioxide at the high temperatures and high pressures found near the surface of Venus. Researchers measure the absorption of infrared light in this gas cell and use the results to interpret infrared observations of Venus like those by VIRTIS on Venus Express.
