Tharsis Region
A portion of the Tharsis region on the surface of Mars (USGS MC-09 quadrangle). The image shows two volcanoes: Uranius Tholus at the centre of the image and a portion of Ceraunius Tholus to the south.
Uranius Tholus is located at 26°N, 262°E, measures about 60 kilometres in diameter, 3 kilometres in height and is probably over 3 billion years of age, indicated by the fact that it is heavily cratered.
Ceraunios Tholus is located at 24°N, 263°E with a summit crater measuring about 25 kilometres across. Ceraunius Tholus shows several channels running down its flanks, indicating that it was easily eroded and probably consists of ash deposits. The deepest of those channels ends in an elliptical crater situated at 25°N, 252°E to the north of the volcano.
