This image, taken by the High Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC) on board ESA's Mars Express spacecraft, was released at the First Mars Express Science Conference this week. It shows the areas of focused research - water, ice, glaciers and volcanism.

In this image, taken at the Martian north pole, the Mars Express spacecraft saw fields of volcanic cones. Some are up to 600 metres high. They appear to indicate very recent volcanic activity, but the question remains, whether it is on-going activity.

Close up views of two of the cones in this image (see: related images) are also available. The first is visible in the lighter top part of this image, and the other is just visible half way down the dark side of the slope.
