This view of the 230-km diameter Lyot crater shows regions where evidence for hydrated silicates, in particular, phyllosilicates, has been found.

The blue strips demarcate two swathes of the Martian surface which have been observed by the OMEGA instrument on ESA's Mars Express. These observations were made in December 2004 (the left swathe) and March 2008 (the right swathe). Tentative evidence for the presence of phyllosilicates in the crater was found in these data but higher resolution observations were required in order to confirm this.

The red rectangles denote regions which were observed with NASA's CRISM instrument between January 2008 and April 2010. Stars indicate the location of sites where phyllosilicates have been found by either instrument. (For further details, see Carter et al., (2010).)
