Illustration of Earth's magnetosphere (in blue) immersed in the solar wind. The orbit of the Cluster satellites is depicted in red. Earth's cusps are located near the poles. They are magnetic field features of the magnetosphere associated with regions through which plasma from the Sun can have direct access to the upper atmosphere.
